Underwood Harem
Jon Hounshell

The ease with which

office girl fingers

once wound their way

throughout this mechanism

pleads the case

for the possession of fingernails.

For as I toil today

with this typewriter ribbon

I falter

at bringing the Underwood

back to life.

Where as,

Way back when

their cigarette recesses

between dictations

slinked white souls

up from the alley way

and back at each desk

sat waiting an Underwood,

the manicure

for hundreds of words.
