Step 1: Washing the Pan

The first step is simply to wash the pan. This is done with the use of warm water, a mild detergent and a gentle scrubbing pad. Wash both the interior and exterior of the cookware. Do not use steel wool as this will damage the cookware. Once done, rinse it and leave it to dry.

Step 2: Coating the Cookware with Oil

The oil to be used here should have a high smoking point. A good example is peanut oil. You will use your fingers to apply the oil on the interior and completely coat it. Make sure you coat even the inner rim.

Step 3: Heating the Pan

This can be done using either a stove or an oven. For the former, simply place it on the stove and heat it using medium heat. Wait until the oil begins to smoke. If you want to use the oven, you will have to heat it at 350-degrees for sixty minutes.

Step 4: Cooling the Pan

Always let the pan cool by itself until it is ready to be handled again. Do not try cooling it using cold water. Once it cools, use paper towels to wipe the excess oil from the pan. To preserve the pan when storing, ensure there is a paper towel in between if you have to stack several of them together.

Step 5: How to Clean the Seasoned Pan

To keep the seasoning from wearing off, do not use soap to clean the pan. Soap removes oil and therefore using it will get the oil layer you applied off. When cleaning it, use paper towels to wipe the pan.

If food gets stuck on to the pan, use oil and salt to clean it off.

Should you be forced to use soap and water to clean the pan, repeat the above process to season it again.
